About Samsung Galaxy A42
The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is an affordable 5G phone that slots into the middle of The Samsung A series of gadgets.
This means that in order to appeal to a large potential user base, it strikes a balance between features and price.
Its Galaxy A stablemates aren’t the only rivals, though, and the A42 is competing in a crowded market with $400- and lower-priced smartphones from manufacturers like Motorola, Google, and others.
Samsung Galaxy A42 Pros & Cons
Pros

- Solid OS upgrade and security support timeline
- Support for sub-6 5G including C-band
Cons
- Busy UI with lots of pre-downloaded apps
- mmWave support isn’t useful for most people
- Screen resolution is low
Galaxy A42 Design
The Galaxy A42 5G makes a great first impression, especially for the price. It has a glass back and is a smoothly rounded rectangle. Plastic is used in more affordable (and even some more expensive) phones, such as the S21.
In particular, the dot pattern that produces an iridescent reflection enhances the sleek appearance of the four-tone gradation under the back glass.
Although it rattles a little, the rear camera bump is mostly unobtrusive, and the teardrop cutout for the front camera doesn’t look out of place with the fullscreen design.
Even bezels on all four sides would have been preferable, but the chin is thicker than the rest and is clearly visible when the screen is on.
Samsung Galaxy A42 Hardware
Samsung makes a decent piece of hardware. The Galaxy A42 is a mid-range phone, so it keeps materials and sex appeal in check.
It’s not dull or stodgy, though, because of that. I’m perfectly happy with the phone because it is about what I would expect to get for the price.
You might say that it resembles a glass sandwich, but that isn’t exactly what is happening. With a plastic back panel and Gorilla Glass 3 on the front, the phone has a polycarbonate frame. The parts were tightly put together by Samsung. No seams had holes in them, and the construction was flawless.
It has an attractive rear panel. Whether you opt for the black, white, or gray model, the “Prism Dot” effect gives you a four-tone pattern on the back. We were given the Prism Dot Black colorway by Samsung, and I actually like how the pattern on the back panel functions.
Although it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, at least it is distinctive to some extent. The square camera module was also kept under control by Samsung.
Galaxy A42’s Battery Life
Samsung went big with the Galaxy A42‘s battery. It boasts a 5,000mAh power cell, which is something we like to see in phones at any price and is quickly evolving into the new standard for phones around the $400 price point.
Here is where the phone benefits greatly from the display. The screen uses less battery life due to the HD+ resolution and typical 60Hz refresh rate than it might with a display with a higher resolution or faster refresh rate.
That’s good news for the Galaxy A42 and potential owners, though it doesn’t quite justify all the aforementioned caveats about the overall display experience.
Conclusion on Samsung Galaxy A42 Review
So in conclusion, is the Samsung Galaxy A42 worth buying?
Despite the phone’s many positive attributes, we don’t believe it is worthwhile to purchase because you can get a better and more modern phone for roughly the same price. You can buy it if:
- You require a battery that lasts
- You are looking for a phone that will easily last 2 years or more
- You need a 5G Samsung phone on Verizon that won’t break the bank
Don’t buy it if…
- You need good cameras
- You require more than 4GB of RAM for heavy multitasking
- 60Hz just doesn’t cut it anymore
